Government of Nunavut maps out next five years of Nursing
Iqaluit, Nunavut (February 9, 2022) –Government of Nunavut’s (GN) Minister of Health, John Main, today announced the release of the Department of Health’s five-year nursing plan – Roadmap to Strengthen the Nunavut Nursing Workforce.
“This roadmap focuses on innovation, collaboration, quality and accountability to build a strong and vibrant nursing workforce,” said Minister Main. “This comprehensive and Nunavut-tailored plan will guide the GN towards a stronger future in Nunavut nursing that meets the needs of all Nunavummiut. I am looking forward to its implementation.”
Roadmap to Strengthen the Nunavut Nursing Workforce aims to create a competent, sufficient, stable, appropriate and well-supported health workforce. The GN will accomplish this goal through five strategic pillars:
- Workforce planning and evaluation.
- Recruitment.
- Professional Development.
- Professional Practice Environment.
- Leadership.
Each pillar is further developed to include initiatives and actions designed to recruit and train Inuit candidates for careers in nursing and other public health professions, implement a nurse residency program, create flexible work arrangements, and support and develop nursing leadership.
