Canada/Nunavut Housing Benefit

The Canada - Nunavut Housing Benefit (CHB) program will finance the difference between 24% of the recipient’s household income and the market rent until the household can transition into a more permanent housing option.  This is a referral-based program. Clients must be referred by our partners, which may include Social Workers, Income Assistance staff, shelters and the Nunavut Housing Corporation.

It facilitates access to housing on the private market for individuals, youth, or families to transition through a period of vulnerability or crisis.

Who can apply?

Applicants must:

1. Be a resident of Nunavut.

2. Be currently living in or want to be living in private rental accommodation and not be receiving any other housing subsidy (for example, public housing, staff housing, student housing).

3. Be paying more than 24% of their household income on rent.

This program is intended as a support to:

1. Individuals and families in crisis;

2. Individuals wanting to leave a shelter;

3. Youth transitioning out of care.

What happens next?

Clients who are successful in becoming beneficiaries of the program will receive a rental subsidy. Clients will continue to work directly with the Coordinator on a regular basis. The Coordinator will help develop a housing transition plan with the client and provide referrals to support services if required.

Clients will be expected to work towards their housing goals in order to secure more permanent accommodation, which may include staff housing, student housing, public housing or other options.

Clients referred by Family Services or shelter workers will be prioritized.
