Office of the Chief Boiler and Gas Inspector (OCBGI)

The OCBGI provides information and services regarding permits, inspections and registration for boiler, pressure vessel and gas installations following the requirements of the Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and Gas Protection Act and their regulations: Boiler and Pressure Vessel Regulations and Gas Protection Regulations.

Note: The Boiler and Pressure Vessel Act and Gas Protection Act are in the process of being repealed and replaced by the Technical Standards & Safety Act.

Stationary Engineer Registration and Examination and Boiler Safety Examination

In Nunavut, registered Stationary Engineers are required for the operation of boilers over 30 KW and installed in commercial and multi-unit residential buildings (single family and duplex homes are excluded). The OCBGI registers and conducts qualification examination of Stationary Engineers. It also conducts boiler safety examinations for Class Engineers 1st through 5th of the National system. Registration renewal is required every three years.

Registration and Examination of Pressure Welders

The OCBGI provides testing and registration of Pressure Welders. Registration is renewed annually.

A permit is required for all boiler and pressure vessel installations where the total connected capacity of a boiler is over 30 KW and installed in other than a single family or duplex home. Any pressure vessel over .06 cubic meters requires a permit before installation.

Registration for Gas Fitters

  • Registration of qualified Gas Fitters is renewed every three years.
  • Permits for Gas Installations and registration of Qualified Gas Fitters.
  • Permits are required for all gas and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) installations.
