Apply for a Driver's Licence

Nunavut Driver's Licences

To legally operate a motor vehicle in Nunavut, you must hold a valid driver's licence. Please see the Nunavut Driver's Manual for more information on driving in Nunavut, applying for a licence, and Nunavut's driver's licence class system.

New Resident Licences

New residents to Nunavut must apply for a driver's licence within 30 days of moving to the territory. New residents with a licence that has expired for more than 12 months will be required to take an examination.

How to apply for a Nunavut driver's licence

To apply for a Nunavut driver's licence, visit your local Motor Vehicle service provider with the following documentation:

  • A completed Driver's Licence Application form
  • Two (2) pieces of acceptable proof of identification. Examples of acceptable proof of identification are:
    • Passport
    • Current Driver’s Licence
    • Other Province Licence/Photo
    • Citizenship Certificate
    • Armed Forces ID Card
    • Federal Police ID Card
    • Certificate of Native Status
    • Firearms Acquisition Certificate
    • Birth Certificate
    • Nunavut ID Age Card
    • Nunavut General  Identification Card
    • Certificate of Naturalization
    • Certificate of Native Status
    • Immigration authorization
    • Marriage Certificate
    • Health Care Insurance Card
    • Credit Cards
    • Nunavut Government ID

Application forms can be completed in advance or in person at your local Motor Vehicle service provider.

Change of Address or Name

Nunavut licence holders must notify the nearest Motor Vehicle service provider of any name or address change within 15 days of the change. To change the address or name on your Nunavut driver's licence, visit your local Motor Vehicle service provider with the following documentation:

  • A completed Driver's Licence Application form
  • A piece of acceptable or legal documentation to substantiate the change, such as a marriage certificate.

Commercial Driving Licences

Commercial driving Licences are required to operate a commercial vehicle, or a vehicle equipped with air brakes. The requirements to apply for a commercial driving licence is different from a personal driving licence. Additional documentation is required when applying for a commercial driving licence.
