Policing
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) provides policing services in Nunavut under the Territorial Police Services Agreement negotiated between the Government of Nunavut and the Government of Canada. The RCMP is independent of the Government of Nunavut and the Department of Justice.
The Department of Justice’s senior management acts as a liaison between the Government of Nunavut and the RCMP and oversees the financial aspects of the Territorial Police Services Agreement. The Minister of Justice and the Chief Superintendent of RCMP “V” Division in Nunavut establish policing priorities for the territory under a shared directional statement.
RCMP “V” Division has personnel posted throughout the territory with detachments in 25 communities.
