Tuberculosis free initiatives

In conjunction with World Tuberculosis (TB) Day, The Department of Health is raising TB awareness and is engaging Nunavummiut through its new “Strong and TB Free” education campaign in collaboration with Nunavut communities and community health representatives (CHRs). Radio scripts, t-shirts, buttons and educational resources were distributed territory-wide to promote TB free communities.

The Department of Health is also expanding its territorial TB Program to better support Nunavummiut affected by the disease, with the Nunavut-wide roll out of a new Latent TB Infection treatment called 3HP. It includes 12 doses - two medications taken once a week for three months.

Through the Inuit Regional Action Plan, Nunavut Tunngavik (NTI) and the Department of Health are working collaboratively to strengthen the partnerships needed to achieve and sustain TB elimination across Nunavut.

This year’s world TB day theme ‘It’s time’, urged global leaders to:

  • scale up access to TB prevention and treatment;
  • build accountability;
  • ensure sufficient and sustainable financing including TB research;
  • promote an end to stigma and discrimination, and
  • promote an equitable, rights-based and people-centered TB response.
