Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards presented to top Nunavut nursing students
IQALUIT, Nunavut (February 24, 2016) – Five Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards, totalling $15,000, were presented to the top Nunavut Arctic College (NAC) nursing students today. The awards are part of the Department of Health’s continued financial support to train a Nunavut-based professional workforce.
“I offer my sincere congratulations to the hard-working recipients of the Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards,” said Minister of Health Paul Okalik. “The scholarships and bursaries provided by the Department of Health to nursing and pre-nursing students are part of our commitment to educate and graduate more skilled Nunavummiut health professionals here in our territory.”
The department also provides bilingual counselling and educational assistance to students. This year, the Department of Health received additional funds from Health Canada to award more bursaries to pre-nursing students in need.
The 2016 scholarship awards winners are: Mishael Gordon, Mark Bursey, Valerie Young, Mavis Ell and Amal Osman. Minister Okalik presented students with their $3,000 scholarships at a luncheon held in their honour.
The Queen Elizabeth II scholarship awards are presented annually to the top students in each year of the nursing program, excluding the first year.
