Premier Savikataaq recognizes National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Premier Joe Savikataaq today released the following statement:
“Today, on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, we remember the 14 women murdered in Montreal on this day in 1989, and the countless others who have been victimized, hurt or killed by senseless violence.
I share in our mutual grief and look forward to a day where every woman in Nunavut, Canada and across the globe can feel as safe and secure as any man. We remember, and we are committed to changing this horrifying reality.
In a jurisdiction where the rate of family violence is 11 times higher than the rest of Canada, many Nunavut families have been touched by violence and its devastating effects. It is critical that our men and boys, and all Nunavummiut, learn about building healthy, safe and respectful relationships, to reduce the incidence of violence against women and girls.
Let’s work together to teach our families and communities about consent, respect and boundaries, so we never have to tell our children about another incident like the one 29 years ago.”
