Premier delivers keynote address at Arctic Security Working Group gathering in Iqaluit

Nunavut Premier P.J. Akeeagok today released the following statement:

“Today, I had the pleasure of delivering a keynote address to the Arctic Security Working Group, an annual event held this year in Iqaluit on June 6 and 7. The Government of Nunavut is co-hosting the meeting with Joint Task Force North.

“The theme of the meeting is Critical Infrastructure: Northern Considerations and Priorities. Over these two days, Nunavut officials are leading panels on priority topics including cyber-security, climate change, and power generation. The working group will also examine the Government of Nunavut’s Emergency Response to the 2021 Iqaluit water contamination incident.

“Conversations about Arctic security must happen here in the North. True Arctic security and sovereignty can only be achieved through investments to close the infrastructure gaps experienced in our communities. We must also ensure investments directed towards Arctic security bolster our shared military and community objectives.

“Through my remarks to the working group, I have re-confirmed our territory’s ongoing commitment to build strong partnerships in Arctic security to shape a more secure and resilient North. Through climate actions, improved technologies, and building on the strength of our people, we will advance our common goals into fundamental human security. I look forward to supporting ongoing collaboration and cooperation through such forums and activities, such as the whole of government exercise Operation Nanook Tatigiit, which will take place in Nunavut in 2024.”
