Personal import limits for tobacco

The Government of Nunavut reminds Nunavummiut that the legal age to buy or possess tobacco is 19 years or older. There is also a strict import limit on tobacco in Nunavut.

You can import up to 400 cigarette sticks, 100 cigars or 800 grams of any other form of tobacco into Nunavut for personal consumption only.

For any amount more than the personal limit, you must apply for an import permit. To get an application, you can:

  • email @email;
  • call us by phone at 1-800-316-3324;
  • visit our Taxation Office at 924 Parnaivik Building (second floor) in Iqaluit.

Nunavut tax on tobacco must be paid upfront with the application. You must keep your permit as it is subject to inspection by a tax officer. If you do not have an import permit, your products could be seized, and you could be fined or face criminal penalties.

For more information, please call 1-800-316-3324 or email @email.
