Nunavut Responds to Urgent Relief Efforts in the Philippines
IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 18, 2013) – The Government of Nunavut is responding to the urgent relief efforts and assistance needed by those affected by the devastating typhoon in the Philippines on November 8, 2013.
The Government of Nunavut will donate $25,000 to the Canadian Red Cross - Typhoon Haiyan Fund for urgent relief efforts in the Philippines.
“This is a disaster of enormous proportions and it is having a devastating impact on the people of the Philippines,” said Premier Eva Aariak. “As Nunavummiut, we hope this donation assists the people of the Philippines in this time of need.”
Nunavut responded to the call for help and assistance following the 2004 Asian Tsunami and the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Once again, Nunavummiut are showing their generosity and compassion for people in the Philippines affected by this disaster.
“Nunavut is made up of many nationalities, including a growing Filipino population,” said Premier- elect, Peter Taptuna. “In keeping with the principles of Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, we want to support a nation that needs assistance during this difficult time.”
