New Leadership at Nunavut Housing Corporation

IQALUIT, Nunavut (March 24, 2014) – Minister George Kuksuk today announced changes to the leadership of the Nunavut Housing Corporation (NHC) board of directors, designating Mr. Bob Leonard of Arviat, as chair.

Mr. Leonard, who was re-appointed to the board in the fall of 2013, replaces Mr. Eugene Lysy of Thunder Bay, Ontario, whose term is set to expire in October 2014.

"Where possible, we feel that northern leadership is preferred on our public agencies," said Minister Kuksuk. "Mr. Leonard possesses the skills and experience necessary to lead the board of directors and is a long-term Nunavut resident and respected community leader."

Mr. Leonard, a founding member of the Nunavut Housing Corporation board of directors and Mayor of Arviat, has more than 30 years of experience in the construction industry. Mr. Leonard has extensive knowledge of procurement, and has worked with municipalities and other business sectors through various private and public roles.

"I’d like to thank Mr. Lysy for his service to Nunavut Housing Corporation and I have confidence that his experience will continue to serve him well in all his endeavors," said Minister Kuksuk. "He has brought a substantial amount of governance experience to NHC and he was instrumental in establishing the corporation’s first board of directors."

Mr. Eugene Lysy was appointed to the board in 2011 and served as the first chair.

According to the Nunavut Housing Corporation Act, board members are recommended by the minister and appointed by cabinet. A director holds office, during pleasure, for a term of three years.
