Interim Total Allowable Harvest limit set for Dolphin and Union caribou herd
The Department of Environment is implementing an interim Total Allowable Harvest (TAH) limit for harvesting caribou from the Dolphin and Union caribou herd in response to a recent steep decline in the population, which has led to a conservation concern. A maximum of forty-two (42) caribou may be harvested from this herd within the Nunavut Settlement Area.
This interim TAH will be reassessed once formal consultations are completed, new information is reviewed, and updated recommendations are submitted to the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board.
The Kitikmeot Regional Wildlife Board will be the responsible agency for determining allocation of the TAH and informing the affected Hunters and Trappers Organizations (HTOs). The affected HTOs include the Ekaluktutiak HTO, Kugluktuk Angoniatit Association, Omingmaktok HTO, and Burnside HTO. Hunters will need to attain an allocation from their respective HTO before hunting and tags will be available for harvested caribou.
