Government of Nunavut and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated reaffirm joint commitment to fight against tuberculosis in Nunavut

Today, Nunavut Health Minister John Main and Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated (NTI) President Aluki Kotierk released the following joint statement.

“In recognition of World TB Day, the Government of Nunavut (GN) and NTI are speaking with one voice to reiterate a collaborative commitment to the elimination of tuberculosis (TB) in Nunavut.

Last year, the GN and NTI signed a TB Information Sharing Agreement that laid the groundwork for enhanced collaborative efforts between our two organizations in the fight against TB. This agreement will allow the GN and NTI to work together more effectively toward reducing TB and its impact on Nunavummiut.

To reduce and eventually eliminate TB in Nunavut, attention must be given to both the clinical care for active and sleeping TB, and the socio-economic conditions that allow TB to persist in our communities. The GN will continue to deliver TB care programs and services, and NTI will continue implementing Inuit-centered and Inuit-led initiatives to support the health and wellness of individuals, families and communities, and especially those affected by TB today and in the past.

There is much work to be done, and by working together, we will achieve our goal of eliminating TB in Nunavut.”
