GN Announces Senior Management Appointments

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 26, 2014) – The Government of Nunavut today announced the following changes to senior management.

Effective October 6, 2014, Rebekah Williams is promoted to the position of Deputy Minister (DM) of Family Services from Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM) for Department of Justice; Mrs. Williams has been acting DM of Justice since November 2013 and has a background in social work and nursing. She is also a former MLA for the constituency of Quttiktuq.

Irene Tanuyak moves to the position of ADM of Family Services from the Department of Culture and Heritage. Ms. Tanuyak has nine years of experience as an ADM, with the departments of Education and Culture and Heritage. She has a long standing career in education and career development in Nunavut.

Naullaq Arnaquq resumes her position as the ADM for Culture and Heritage. Ms. Arnaquq was on a two year education leave to work on her PhD in Educational Studies.

"With these senior management changes, all the deputy minister level positions in our government have now been filled," said Premier Peter Taptuna. "I look forward to new leadership in these departments, and to continued progress within these important portfolios. I will ensure a smooth transition period, to allow incoming incumbents to become familiar with the programs, policies and procedures."

Simon Awa will be reassigned to a senior position within the public service, effective October 14, 2014. Mr. Awa is long-term DM, and was previously involved in the development of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, as well as the executive director for the Nunavut Implementation Commission.

Mike Shouldice, who has served over 20 years with the Nunavut Arctic College (NAC), is set to retire as of October 25, 2014. Mr. Shouldice has been the President of NAC since 2011. His extensive knowledge of the NAC will be missed.

Peter Ma will assume the role of President of NAC, effective October 14, 2014. Mr. Ma currently serves as the President of the Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC). Previously, Mr. Ma held various deputy minister portfolios within the Nunavut government; his board administration experience will be beneficial to this new role.

Alain Barriault becomes President of QEC, effective October 14, 2014. Mr. Barriault has served as the president of the Nunavut Housing Corporation for a number of years, and most recently worked as the Principal Secretary to Premier Taptuna during the transition of the new government.

Effective September 23, 2014, John MacDonald is appointed to the role of ADM for the Department of Education. Mr. MacDonald was the successful candidate in the ADM competition. He has held senior management positions in both the departments of Family Services and Education.
