Elder Abuse Awareness Day and protecting our Elders
World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, June 15, is a time to recognize that we must protect our seniors from all forms of abuse.
Elders are the foundation of our society in Nunavut. The Department of Justice is committed to ensuring our Elders are treated with dignity and respect, and that we have the necessary tools to keep them safe from physical, emotional, and financial abuse.
The Family Abuse Intervention Act can assist Elders who are in abusive relationships by providing access to Emergency Protection Orders and Community Intervention Orders.
An Emergency Protection Order can mandate an abusive family member be removed from the home within short notice. The Emergency Protection Order may also grant custody of children and possession of the family home, as well as prohibit the abusive person from contacting the person experiencing abuse.
A Community Intervention Order is for anyone, including Elders, in non-emergency situations who requires assistance with family relationships in the form of traditional Inuit counselling.
To apply for one of these orders or to learn more about how they work, please contact your local Community Justice Outreach Worker.
The Department of Justice also encourages Nunavummiut who are aware of Elder abuse to contact their local RCMP Detachment.
