COVID-19 identified in Naujaat

Iqaluit, Nunavut (January 15, 2022) – Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer is announcing five new reported cases of COVID-19 in the territory, plus one presumptive case in Naujaat.

There are currently 133 confirmed active cases of COVID-19 in Nunavut – eight in Arviat, 13 in Baker Lake, 10 in Cambridge Bay, five in Chesterfield Inlet, 12 in Coral Harbour, 21 in Iqaluit, 16 in Kinngait, five in Pangnirtung, one in Pond Inlet, one in Qikiqtarjuaq, 27 in Rankin Inlet, five in Sanirajak, one in Sanikiluaq, eight in Whale Cove.

Today’s case in Naujaat is presumptive, awaiting confirmatory testing. The cases previously reported in Gjoa Haven, Kugaaruk and Taloyoak continue to be presumptive.

There have been 253 total reported recoveries in this outbreak.

Strict public health measures are still in effect Nunavut wide and travel restrictions are in place in Rankin Inlet, Iqaluit and Pangnirtung. Travel to and from those communities is restricted to essential travel only. Travel to and from those communities is permitted for those returning to their home community or travelling to Southern Canada. All other travel requires authorization from the CPHO.

Anyone who develops COVID-19 symptoms is advised to call the COVID hotline at
1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT or notify their community health centre right away by telephone. Please do not go to the health centre in person.
