Celebrate International Literacy Day

This year marks the 50th anniversary of International Literacy Day. This event is celebrated worldwide on September 8, to raise awareness about the importance of literacy as the foundation of all learning.

Literacy is the ability, confidence and willingness to engage with language to support the understanding and ability to develop reading and writing skills. This year on International Literacy Day, the Department of Education will launch a literacy framework for all Nunavut’s official languages to promote strong literacy skills within our schools. The framework focuses on raising literacy skills and basic education levels for the 2017-2018 school year and beyond.

The Government of Nunavut recognizes that improving literacy skills can help Nunavummiut achieve their goals, and improve opportunities for employment and personal empowerment.
