2022 United for Life Summit
Cambridge Bay, Nunavut (November 3, 2022) – Cambridge Bay hosted the 2022 United for Life Summit from October 29 to November 2. The five-day event, titled Inuuqatigiikpugut / We are a community, was organized by the Nunavut Suicide Prevention Strategy partners in collaboration with the Kitikmeot Friendship Society.
The 2022 edition focused on youth by raising awareness of existing opportunities for youth and working to ensure future initiatives reflect youth needs and priorities.
More than 100 stakeholders – including Elders, youth advocates, survivors, front-line workers, wellness workers, Inuit wellness organizations, local artists, the Government of Nunavut, and Designated Inuit Organization staff – gathered to share best practices and to continue working towards a long-term action plan for suicide prevention.
“Suicide is an extremely serious issue that has claimed the lives of far too many Nunavummiut. Through hardship and harsh conditions, we are working together against suicide with our valued partner organizations,” said John Main, Minister of Health and Minister responsible for Suicide Prevention. “This summit carries on the tradition of working together for a common cause and will contribute to a collaborative approach to suicide prevention. The Department of Health wishes to thank the community of Cambridge Bay for their invaluable support.”
Summit themes included identity, inclusion, belonging and Inunnguiniq (making capable and contributing human beings). This event created a space for stakeholders, partners, youth and advocates from diverse backgrounds to reflect together and share ideas, best practices, and inspiration.
The United for Life gatherings are an outcome of the 2015 coroner’s inquest into suicide that called for increased stakeholder engagement and collaboration into suicide prevention, and the creation of bi-annual conferences.
