Nunavut Rental Office

The Rental Office receives, investigates, mediates and settles complaints under the Residential Tenancies Act, which covers rules and regulations about residential housing rentals in Nunavut.

The office provides information to the public about the rights and obligations of tenants and landlords who are in tenancy agreements. The Rental Officer receives inquiries, investigates complaints, helps resolve disputes, and makes orders if a dispute between a tenant and landlord cannot be resolved.

The Rental Office does not cover housing owned by the federal government.

The office can provide information about all other residential rental property in Nunavut, including:

  • How the Residential Tenancies Act works
  • Obligations of Landlords and Tenants
  • Repairs and maintenance of rental units
  • Renewal or termination of tenancy agreements
  • Security deposits
  • Differences with staff housing, private rentals and public housing

When a tenant or a landlord submits an application with the Rental Office about a complaint or dispute involving a residential rental agreement, the Rental Officer will investigate and seek to mediate a solution between the tenant and landlord. If a resolution is not possible, a hearing may take place. The Rental Officer will hear both sides then make a decision and issue an order.

If the Rental Officer makes an order for payment, the order can be enforced by the Court. Failing to comply with an order or any other violation under the Residential Tenancies Act could result in a fine of up to $2,000.

A landlord or tenant affected by an order or decision of a Rental Officer may appeal within 14 days to the Nunavut Court of Justice.
