Introduction to Prospecting

Prospecting is the process of examining an area to determine the presence and quality of mineral deposits. It involves an important process of research, mapping, sampling, and potentially even drilling and development.

There are many good reasons to prospect an area, such as having seen unusually coloured rocks or quartz veins you feel are worth investigating. Maybe your traditional knowledge suggests that there might be something interesting there. Prospecting can be done by amateurs and professionals, although it is important for anyone prospecting in Nunavut to know the proper steps and follow important procedures, especially in terms of determining land ownership and protection.

As part of ensuring potential prospectors are informed, here is a 5-part series of presentations outlining basic information about prospecting in Nunavut.
