Vaccine Supply in Nunavut

Maureen Baikie, Chief Medical Officer of Health, released the following statement:
"The Department of Health has issued recent Public Service Announcements and provided media interviews encouraging Nunavummiut to get their flu shot.
In areas across the country, health authorities from other provinces and territories are reporting a shortage of the flu vaccine. This is not the present case for Nunavut.
The flu vaccine, such as FluMist, does have to be used within a certain period from its manufacturing date. To ensure no stock reaches its expiration, the age criteria for the FluMist vaccine will be broadened to include anyone from ages 2 to 59 until January 20, 2014. The FluMist vaccine is sprayed in the nose.
I want to remind everyone that you can protect yourself by using good health practices:
• Get your flu shot
• Cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze
• Wash your hands frequently
It is also recommended that if you are sick, stay home to avoid spreading the illness.
You can get your influenza vaccine at the community health centre."
