UPDATE: Local state of emergency in Pangnirtung

April 9, 2015 – CURRENT UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

Iqaluit, NU

The situation in Pangnirtung remains unchanged today, after power was restored on Monday, April 6, 2015.

Power remains on throughout the entire community. Residents are asked to conserve power as much as possible, as the emergency back-up generators powering the community are a temporary measure until a mid-term solution can be put into place.

Residents are advised that a power usage program is in effect to moderate the use of large household appliances and electrical devices, such as washing machines and dryers, on a regularly scheduled basis. The hamlet is advising residents to listen to local community radio for information on this power usage schedule.

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) will perform required maintenance work on the emergency back-up network this weekend. Power outages are not anticipated at this time, but they may be unavoidable once work begins. Outage notices will be provided if necessary.

The NCC building in Pangnirtung remains closed until further notice. This affects the Pangnirtung regional offices of Education, Family Services, Health, Environment, Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs, Community and Government Services, and Economic Development and Transportation. Staff are not expected to report to work during the office closure.

The community health centre is open, and Government of Nunavut essential services staff are working from alternate locations.

The local state of emergency will remain in effect until a mid-term solution is arranged. Please listen to the local community radio station for information on office closures and important updates.
