UPDATE: Local state of emergency in Pangnirtung

April 10, 2015 – CURRENT UPDATE: 3:30 p.m.

Iqaluit, NU

The situation in Pangnirtung remains unchanged today, after power was restored on Monday, April 6, 2015.

Power remains on throughout the entire community. Residents are asked to conserve power as much as possible and to listen to local community radio for information from the hamlet about the power usage schedule for large household appliances.

Schools in Pangnirtung will re-open on Monday morning for a half-day of classes due to the civic holiday in Pangnirtung. The regular school schedule will resume on Tuesday.

Power is anticipated to be restored to the NCC building later today. The building will be closed for the remainder of the day. Staff are not expected to report to work during the office closure. Government of Nunavut staff are advised to listen to local radio for office closure information.

Qulliq Energy Corporation (QEC) will perform required maintenance work on the emergency back-up generator this weekend, beginning overnight tonight. Power outages are not anticipated at this time, but they may be unavoidable once work begins.

Transportation of equipment for a mid-term power solution may begin as early as Sunday, and will continue throughout the week. QEC technicians will begin to install the equipment as soon as it has arrived.

The community health centre is open, and Government of Nunavut essential services staff are working from alternate locations.

The local state of emergency will remain in effect until a mid-term solution is arranged. Please listen to the local community radio station for information on office closures and important updates.
