Public Health measures increased in Igloolik

Iqaluit, Nunavut (January 24, 2022) – Dr. Michael Patterson, Nunavut’s Chief Public Health Officer is announcing the implementation of strict public health measures for the Hamlet of Igloolik, effective immediately.

“I am responding to the speed in which COVID-19 is spreading in the community,” said Dr. Patterson. “Effective immediately, we will be moving to our strictest public health measures in Igloolik, including restricting non-essential travel to and from the community. Anyone who left the community since January 17 is asked to isolate immediately for seven days if you are vaccinated and 10 days if you are not vaccinated.”

Additional public health measures are as follows:

  • Outdoor gatherings are limited to five people.
  • Indoor gatherings are not allowed.
  • There may be up to five visitors in a home, for essential or emergency services.
  • Schools will remain closed until advised by the CPHO.
  • Day cares may open for children of essential workers.
  • Places of worship are closed.
  • All non-essential businesses and government offices are closed.
  • Libraries and arenas are closed.
  • Restaurants may open for takeout only.
  • In-person group counselling sessions are not allowed.
  • Long-term care and Elders’ facilities are closed to visitors.
  • Masks remain mandatory in all communities and non-essential travel continues to be discouraged.

Premier P.J. Akeeagok and Dr. Patterson will hold a live COVID-19 update tomorrow, Tuesday, January 25, at 11 a.m. EDT. Tune in on the Legislative Assembly TV channel, at http://video.isilive.ca/nunavut/ or on radio in Iqaluit at 92.5FM.

Anyone who develops COVID-19 symptoms – runny nose, cough, sore throat, fever or difficulty breathing – should call the COVID hotline at 1-888-975-8601 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT. There are longer wait times to get through to the hotline, so please remain patient. Please do not call or go to the health centre.
