Nunavut Premier calls on federal party leaders to outline Arctic vision in open letter

IQALUIT, Nunavut (September 21, 2015) – Peter Taptuna, Premier of Nunavut, sent an open letter to all four federal party leaders today, seeking clarity on each party’s vision for the continued development and prosperity of Canada’s Arctic.

"We’re halfway through the election campaign, and no federal party has offered a clear plan on how they will work with Canada’s territories to build healthy communities and a prosperous economy in the North," said Premier Taptuna.

The open letter outlines six key areas of priority for the Government of Nunavut: economic development, infrastructure, housing, devolution, culture, and climate change.

"Nunavummiut and all Canadians living in the North deserve to know how the next federal government plans to address the unique challenges facing Canada’s Arctic communities. I look forward to discussing these issues with the federal party leaders," said Taptuna.

Premier Taptuna is looking to challenge the federal party leaders to outline their priorities for the North. The open letter calls for details on how each party would implement their policies, to ensure that Nunavummiut can make an informed decision come election day.
