Northern Aviation Scholarships applications and awards

IQALUIT, Nunavut (November 7, 2013) – Three Nunavut students have been awarded $5,000 scholarships under the Northern Aviation Scholarship Program (formerly the Aviation Career Development Program) for the 2013-2014 school year.

The scholarships are given each year to students from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories (NWT) who are pursuing full-time studies leading to a northern aviation career. There are more scholarships Nunavummiut can apply for. Half scholarships ($2,500 for full-time studies of at least 10 weeks in duration) and full scholarships ($5,000 for full-time studies of at least 20 weeks in duration) are available.

This year’s recipients are:

Thomas Cousins, recipient of a scholarship sponsored by First Air. Thomas is a first-time recipient.

Colin Gunn, recipient of a scholarship sponsored by Keewatin Air. Colin is a first-time recipient.

Andrea Niptanatiak, recipient of a scholarship sponsored by the Government of Nunavut. Andrea is a first-time recipient.

SECOND INTAKE OF APPLICATIONS

There will be a second intake of applicants for Nunavut’s remaining Northern Aviation Scholarships. To be eligible, students have to be attending school between August 1, 2013 and August 31, 2014, be a resident of the Northwest Territories or Nunavut for at least the previous two years, and be returning to Nunavut to work in aviation upon completion.

The application deadline for the second intake is January 31, 2014.

The Northern Aviation Scholarship program is an initiative of the Governments of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut with individual scholarships sponsored from Discovery Air, First Air, Keewatin Air, and North-Wright Airways. The program is intended to encourage residents of the NWT and Nunavut to pursue a northern aviation career by assisting with some of the costs associated with aviation training.
