Local state of emergency declared in Pangnirtung

April 15, 2015 – CURRENT UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.

Iqaluit, NU

Pangnirtung remains under a local state of emergency after emergency back-up power was restored on Monday, April 6, 2015.

All schools and Government of Nunavut offices have reopened, and local businesses have resumed their regular schedules.

Emergency back-up generators are still powering the entire community. Residents are advised to conserve any available power until a mid-term power solution is established.

Four self-contained generator units arrived in Iqaluit on a Boeing 767 this past weekend to be transported to Pangnirtung. An Antonov A-124-100 cargo aircraft transported a Sikorsky S-64F Skycrane helicopter to Iqaluit on Monday, April 13. This heavy-lift helicopter will be used to transport the generators to Pangnirtung over the next week, weather permitting.

These generators will be used to establish a mid-term power supply for the community. Qulliq Energy Corporation technicians will install equipment as it arrives in Pangnirtung over the next week. Brief power outages may be unavoidable during this time.

The local state of emergency will remain in effect until the mid-term power solution has been fully implemented in the community. Please listen to the local community radio station for information and important updates.
