GN participation in the Grays Bay Road and Port project

IQALUIT, Nunavut (April 13, 2018) – The Government of Nunavut (GN) was recently advised that its submission to the National Trade Corridors Fund (NTCF) for funding of the Grays Bay Road and Port (GBRP) project was not successful.

The Kitikmeot Inuit Association (KIA) and the GN have collaborated on the GBRP project for several years, and have jointly agreed that as of this month, KIA will assume the role of sole-proponent for this project in future NTCF submissions. The GN continues to support the project in principle, and will monitor developments of the GBRP and provide support where applicable.

"I recognize the importance of the Grays Bay Road and Port project to the Kitikmeot region and Nunavut overall," said Economic Development and Transportation Minister, Joe Savikataaq. "I have full confidence that the Kitikmeot Inuit Association has the ability and vision to see this project through to its completion."

The Grays Bay Road and Port is a proposed transportation system that would connect the mineral resources of Canada’s Slave province, which straddles Nunavut and the Northwest Territories, to arctic shipping routes. The GBRP would consist of a 227-kilometre all-season road linking the northern end of the Tibbit-Contwoyto Winter Road to a deep-water port at Grays Bay on the Northwest Passage in western Nunavut near Kugluktuk.
