GN and Carrefour Nunavut partner to provide better service

IQALUIT, Nunavut (February 5, 2014) – The Government of Nunavut is joining forces with Carrefour Nunavut to bring Nunavummiut employability services in French.

"Organizations that have technical expertise and have a proven record of contributing to the economic development of Nunavut should be natural partners to our programs," said Minister of Family Services Jeannie Ugyuk. "We value the opportunity to work closely and in partnership with publicly-funded organizations like Carrefour."

Through this new partnership, Carrefour Nunavut aims to promote programs and services of the Department of Family Services in French. This includes Employment Assistance Services, Adult Learning and Training Supports, Training on the Job, the Self-Employment Option, and Financial Assistance for Nunavut Students.

"This partnership moves us closer to meeting our obligations under the Official Languages Act," said John MacDonald, Director of Career Development at the Department of Family Services. "It means that we are recognizing an opportunity to avoid duplicating the delivery of some of our key services."

Carrefour Nunavut is an economic development organization that has been active in employment services with Francophone Nunavummiut since 2010.

Amélie Morel, who manages the employability and entrepreneurship file at Carrefour Nunavut, said she sees, "great opportunities for self-employed Francophone and entrepreneurs who could benefit from this partnership."

"Any career development program should reduce barriers to services, and we think that working with Carrefour Nunavut enables us to better promote and deliver a full range of programs and services to Nunavummiut in French," said MacDonald.
