Fuel prices set to increase on January 1, 2014
IQALUIT, Nunavut (December 20, 2013) – Rising fuel prices on the worldwide market will mean the price of petroleum products in Nunavut will increase effective January 1, 2014.
The Petroleum Products Division of the Department of Community and Government Services purchases the bulk fuel supply for the territory.
"Nunavut has enjoyed some of the lowest and most stable fuel prices in Canada. Our retail prices for gasoline and home heating fuel have not increased since 2008," said Tom Sammurtok, Minister of Community and Government Services. "These new rates reflect world fuel prices that continue to increase."
Prices for fuel products in Nunavut will increase as follows:
Diesel 10 cents/litre ($0.10/litre) Gasoline 20 cents/litre ($0.20/litre) Jet Fuel 2.50 cents/litre ($0.025/litre)
These new prices will be effective in all Nunavut communities on January 1, 2014. The new retail prices exclude any applicable taxes.
Nunavummiut are encouraged to take advantage of programs offered by the Government of Nunavut such as the Department of Family Services’ Senior Fuel Subsidy to assist elders with home heating costs, and the Department of Finance’s Fuel Tax Rebate which offers harvesters, outfitters and tour operators a tax rebate of 6.4¢ per litre on gasoline for eligible activities.
