Declaration of Candidacy for Municipal Elections ends on September 27, 2019

Elections for mayors and municipal councillors in all of Nunavut’s 25 communities will take place on October 28, 2019.

Under the Nunavut Elections Act’s new rules for municipal elections, all prospective candidates must declare themselves to stand in the elections. There is no longer a requirement to be nominated. Prospective candidates can run for the role of either mayor or councillor, but not for both.

Eligibility requirements for being a candidate in municipal elections are listed on Elections Nunavut website.

Prospective candidates can declare their candidacy for elections from 9 a.m. Monday September 23, 2019 until 2 p.m. on Friday September 27, 2019.

Elected mayors and councillors will be responsible for attending council meetings and making decisions on community issues. The term for mayor and council will now be four years.

Candidates can contact Elections Nunavut by phone, fax or email to learn more details about their roles and rights.

Contact details for Elections Nunavut can be found on the Elections Nunavut website: https://www.elections.nu.ca/en/municipal-elections/municipal-council/abo... .
