Canada-Nunavut Housing Benefit (CHB) Program

The Canada-Nunavut Housing Benefit (CHB) program, administered by the Department of Family Services, provides temporary financial relief to individuals or families in private rental accommodation. It provides access to benefits for housing on the private market so individuals, youth, or families can transition through a period of vulnerability or crisis.

This program pays the difference between 24% of the recipient household’s income and the market rent until the household can transition into a more permanent housing option. Not all rent will be covered by the benefit, and applicants are responsible for utilities.

Applicants must have income, be in private rental accommodation and not receiving any other housing benefit, such as public or staff housing. Pre-approval of eligibility for the program can be provided, but applicants are responsible for securing housing and entering into their own lease agreement.

For self-referrals, Nunavut beneficiaries will be given priority.

For additional information on the Canada-Nunavut Housing Benefit program and assistance in applying, please contact Peepeelee Qappik at @email or call 867-975-5261.

This program is made possible through funding from the Government of Canada, through the Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation.
