Air Quality Health Index program launches in Nunavut
The Government of Nunavut Department of Environment is pleased to announce that the federal Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) program will launch in Iqaluit, Kugluktuk and Arviat this week.
The AQHI measures the impact of air pollution on human health by reporting a number between 1 and 10+, where higher values reflect higher air pollution and an increased health risk.
Especially valuable for elders and children who may be more sensitive to air pollution, the AQHI will provide an excellent tool to understand how events, such as fires or blowing road dust, can change the quality of the air we breathe. This ongoing program will also advise on how to adjust outdoor activities when air quality conditions change.
The AQHI for Kugluktuk, Arviat and Iqaluit is currently available on the Government of Canada website at https://ec.gc.ca/cas-aqhi/ and on the AQHI CANADA phone app.
