Foster care

The Department of Family Services (DFS) provides in-person and virtual training to foster parents throughout the year to support the physical, psychological, and emotional needs of children and families in vulnerable situations within Nunavut.

Training sessions may include:

  • Foster parent orientation and pre-service training
  • Supporting Adolescents with mental health
  • Safe caring for children who have experienced abuse
  • Trauma and attachment
  • Understanding how grief, loss, vicarious trauma, compassion fatigue and burnout impacts foster parents and the workers supporting them.
  • Parenting youth in foster care
  • Permanency planning
