Nunavut Arts

The message is trust, authenticity guaranteed

The Authentic Nunavut logo makes a promise that everyone who uses it can trust. The promise of this logo says the art work bearing the Authentic Nunavut symbol is genuine and hand made by a Nunavut artist.

The development of Authentic Nunavut – an international brand for Nunavut arts and crafts – is fundamental to establishing a recognizable presence in the national and international art markets. This brand will certify the authenticity of Nunavut artists along with their work locally and around the world.

The Authentic Nunavut logo is a registered trademark owned by the Government of Nunavut on behalf of its artists.

About the Logo

The Authentic Nunavut symbol was influenced by 50 Nunavut artists who shared their observations, thoughts and feelings about life in Nunavut, the joy of geography, and how the land sustains them. The land is about the people that live in Nunavut, togetherness and community. This image captures the elements of that inspiration.

The design combines earth, water and sun. This image resonated with the artists, who agreed that: “This is Nunavut. It says it all.”

  • The sun is a Northern sun, low on the horizon. Its vivid golden yellow and the presence of sun dogs suggest a rising sun’s exceptional radiance in frosty air — conveying joy and optimism.
  • The blue waters are surrounded by white space that suggests spring or fall ice.
  • The earthy green of the landscape sums up Nunavut geography — open spaces, distant hills, rolling terrain, and coastline on salt or fresh water

The Authentic Nunavut brand will complement, not replace, existing tags and logos. The branding program is designed to be used either independently or along with other symbols, as decided by the artists or retailers themselves. There are important existing logos and symbols associated with Nunavut fine art and crafts: Igloo Tag; Cape Dorset chop; Pangnirtung chop; Baker Lake chop. These existing brands are well established with broad awareness and credibility with collectors. They form a strong foundation for the current Nunavut international branding project on the global market, which adds its own piece to the story of an artwork from Nunavut.

Nunavut Arts and Crafts

Since the creation of Nunavut in 1999, the arts and crafts sector has made a significant contribution annually towards Nunavut’s economy. The most recent surveys tell us that approximately 4,000 persons – one in seven in the territory – identify themselves as “active artists.” The large majority of these artists are Canadian Inuit, whose artistic contribution to the territory is both cultural and economic. In fewer than 50 years, through the production and sale of art, Canadian Inuit artists have established a national reputation for the distinctiveness and quality of their work and shared their vision of the world with an international audience.

Today, diversity abounds in the kinds of hand-made artwork from Nunavut including but not limited to: carvings in stone, ivory, bone, and antler; fine art prints, drawings and paintings; ceramics; woven tapestries; basketry; contemporary fashions and traditional clothing; and jewellery and metal art. All of these creations are defined by the Inuktitut term sanaugait – things made by hand.
