Species Management

Barrenground Caribou

Barrenground caribou are found throughout the mainland in the Kivalliq and Kitikmeot regions and most of Baffin, Victoria and Southampton islands, as well as several smaller islands in the northern and eastern Foxe Basin. On the mainland, the Qamanirjuaq, Beverly, Bathurst and Bluenose herds winter in the forests south of Nunavut; while population on the northern mainland and arctic islands occupy Nunavut's tundra year-round.

Grizzly Bear

In Nunavut, the grizzly can be found throughout the Kivalliq region and in large portions of the Kitikmeot region.

Muskox

Muskox occur primarily on the arctic islands in the Baffin and northern Kitikmeot regions.

Peary Caribou

The Peary Caribou can be found on the high arctic islands, including Banks, Prince of Whales, Somerset and the Queen Elizabeth islands.

Polar Bear

The polar bear can be found throughout Nunavut, mainly close to the coastline but some animals may travel many kilometres inland to den or simply to cross islands and get to other hunting areas.
