The Government of Nunavut has accepted the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board’s decision to set a total allowable harvest (TAH) of 250 male caribou for Baffin Island.
This is a reminder that since January 1, 2015, it is illegal to hunt or kill caribou anywhere on Baffin Island and its surrounding islands, including Prince Charles Island and Bylot Island.
The Department of Environment wants to clarify recent reports that an additional government restriction on the harvest of Baffin Island caribou was put in place in October.
The Baffin Island Caribou harvest for 2023-2024 in Iqaluit is closed effective immediately. No further harvesting is allowed without an approved community allocation.
The Minister of Environment has accepted a decision recommended by the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board (NWMB) to increase the Total Allowable Harvest (TAH) of Baffin Island Caribou effective immediately for 2022-2023 harvest season.
