Reporting to the Manager, Finance and Administration, the Senior Finance Officer provides financial and accounting services for the Department of Family Services, and maintains the department’s flow of financial data, while overseeing a staff of four who are responsible for accounts payable, contract management, purchasing, Student Assistance loans collection, bank reconciliations, tax receipts for income assistance

Senior Finance Officer responsibilities include but not limited to; reconciling corrections using JV’s; ensuring commitments are appropriately coded to budget; revenue processing; preparing invoices; maintaining signing authorities and specimen signature records; prepares year-end; assists in ongoing financial projects; monitoring of assists and inventory.

The incumbent must have knowledge in General Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Financial Administration Act (FAA), Financial Administration Manual, and a working understanding of financial legislation and policies.

The skills required to succeed in this position include, proficiency in maths, English communications skills, sound judgement and problem solving, attention to detail, competency in spreadsheets and general accounting software, demonstrates leadership and supervisory skills.

Normally the requirements are gained through a recognized diploma in business administration or accounting, with a minimum of three years public sector accounting experience, working knowledge of financial accounting systems, and experience in working in a customer service environment. Acceptable equivalencies may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
