Under the direction of the Manger Laboratory Services the Laboratory Technologist is responsible for collecting and analyzing a variety of biological samples within the Qikiqtani General Hospital Laboratory in accordance with recognized international laboratory practices, upholding the philosophy and objective of the Department of Health to ensure that medical and non-medical professionals have the test results necessary to diagnose, treat, and manage disease and sorting, analyzing and distributing biological samples collected within the Qikiqtani General Hospital and biological samples referred in from the health facilities. Incumbent will be performing, recording, interpreting and monitoring Quality Control (QC) on all instruments and procedures to ensure the precision and accuracy of results reported.
The successful candidate must have a recognized diploma or degree in Medical Laboratory Technology from a Canadian College or University and be licensed with the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science. Also, a minimum of 6 months experience in all departments of clinical laboratory (hematology, chemistry, blood bank, microbiology) is mandatory. An ability to complete a satisfactory Vulnerable Sector check is mandatory. Incumbent must have advanced knowledge of Laboratory Technology, Principles and Standards of Practice with a focus on a laboratory functions, principles, and standards of practice including venipuncture, medical terminology and the ability to operate and understand complex laboratory instrumentation is required. The incumbent must be able to acquire within a reasonable time frame and remain current with the following training and certifications: WHIMS, Internet and Email service, fire training, Dangerous Goods Course and hand washing in service. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
