Cannabis still illegal in Nunavut

The Department of Justice advises Nunavummiut that despite the recent Nunavut Legislative Assembly’s passage of Bill 7, Cannabis Act, this law is not in force until October 17, 2018, when the Government of Canada Cannabis Act (C-45) comes into effect.

Meanwhile, it is still a crime to buy, sell, possess, use, or grow cannabis in Nunavut. Doing so, can result in criminal charges, serious penalties, and potentially a criminal record.

The only exception is if a person has a federally-authorized medical certificate for cannabis, which may allow them to possess and use a limited amount of cannabis for medical purposes.
