As per HRM Directive 518, this employment opportunity is restricted to Nunavut Inuit by Hall Beach location only.

As a member of the Student Support Team, the Student Support Assistant (SSA) assists in program adaptations or accommodations as planned with the Student Support Teacher and Classroom Teachers. The SSA will work with designated students to ensure the highest degree of inclusion within the educational and social programs of the school.

Under the direction of the Student Support Teacher and the supervision of the Principal, the SSA will:

  • Assist with students
  • Provide interpretive help as required (Inuktitut and English)
  • Work closely with the Student Support Teacher, other SSAs and Classroom Teachers
  • Participate in student support team meetings when requested
  • Discuss students’ progress with teachers
  • Assist in the transportation, personal care and movement of the designated students
  • Provide information and participate in consultation in the preparation of the individual student support plans
  • Keep qualitative and quantitative records of students’ daily work
  • Help with assistive communication devices when necessary

The successful person in this role will have a patient, caring, student-centered attitude with good communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will be reliable and provide a high quality service to students and the school.

The successful candidate will have completion of Grade 12 or Adult Basic Education equivalent to Grade 12. Good written and oral communication skills in Inuktitut and English are required. The candidate must have basic computer skills or willing to acquire this skill. Prior experience in a school setting is considered an asset. Participation in the courses Non-Violent Crisis Intervention and First Aid are also considered assets. 

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is required.
