Relief Institutional Cook

Under the direction of the Food Services Manager at the Baffin Correctional Centre, the cook will prepare meals, instruct offender kitchen workers, and conduct required kitchen operations to ensure the timely and secure delivery of meals. The position is required to ensure Food Safe, Health and Safety regulations are followed to provide quality assurance to staff and offenders.
The Institutional Cook supervises up to 8 inmates within the kitchen setting. Assist the inmates in their ability to learn proper food handling techniques and food preparation for all meals that are served at the correctional facility. This position follows established policies and procedures for food services using regulations and guidelines set forth by Health Canada including but not limited to Canada’s Food Guide and Food Safety Standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS regulations and HACCP standards, to provide quality assurance to Staff and inmates.
Preferred candidates will have a minimum of 2 years food service experience preferred high volume production. Familiarity with therapeutic diets and allergies, infection control, quantity control, quality control, and portion control are required. You must have Class 5 driver’s license and First Aid CPR certification. You must have knowledge of purchasing and inventory control, as well as knowledge in apprenticeship program. You must be able to instruct with inmates with good verbal and written communication skills. The ability to communicate in Inuktitut and/or Inuinnaqtun would be an asset as this position works directly with inmates. This position will require long periods of standing and working on your feet as well as the ability to lift up to 50 pounds intermittently. You will be required to stay alert (looking, hearing, listening, smelling, etc.) at all times.
