This position exists to provide transportation services for medical staff, in order to document patient care in a timely, effective and efficient manner. The incumbent provides transcription services to all categories of medical staff, including family practitioners, medical residents, general and specialty surgeons, psychiatrists and various other medical specialty physicians. The incumbent works as an integral part of the team responsible for managing patient care information and as direct impact on the day-to-day operations of compiling, preserving and disseminating information essential to the delivery of health services to the public. The accuracy and timeliness of transcribing and distributing dictated health records effects communication among healthcare workers.

The Medical Transcriptionist is responsible for recognizing, interpreting, evaluating inconsistencies, discrepancies, and inaccuracies in medical dictation’ Compiling dictation logs; Collaborating with coworkers to ensure medical dictations are processed and completed in accordance with established standards, policy and legislative requirements; and Instructing physicians in the proper use of the dictation system.

Contextual Knowledge of medical transcription practices, medical terminology, anatomy and physiology. The incumbent should have the ability to operate word-processing and database management software, dictation-transcription equipment, and general office equipment; ability to work under pressure with time constraints; and ability to take direction and work independently in an organized manner under minimal supervision.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized High School Diploma, Medical Transcriptionist Certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution. An acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, English and French.

Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.

Experience with Meditech software is considered an asset.

Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
