Reporting to the Manager, Teacher Education Program, the incumbent is responsible for the development, delivery and evaluation of Inuktut Language and culture courses developed for learners registered in the College’s teacher education program. Program delivery may be at either the Nunatta Campus or at various field locations throughout Nunavut. The incumbent may be required to teach additional courses outside the Inuit Language and culture field of study, such as Inuit History and Identity courses, teaching methods courses and any other chosen courses.
The Nunavut Teacher Education Program is offered in partnership with the Faculty of Education at Memorial University of Newfoundland. The position contributes towards the Nunavut Teacher Education Program’s objective to graduate culturally competent and bilingual teachers. The incumbent in the position will directly transmit advanced knowledge and skills of Inuit Language and culture to the learners enrolled in the Nunavut Teacher Education Program. The incumbent will also make recommendations around ways to infuse Inuktut and Inuit culture into all courses delivered in the program.
The incumbent will develop and deliver instruction as required to meet learner needs and the standards established by the College/Memorial University of Newfoundland by working and assisting program staff and colleagues in sharing Inuktut language and cultural expertise to NTEP faculty; preparing course syllabi; delivering lessons using a variety of instructional strategies that emphasize the use of Inuktut language and Inuit societal values; recommending curriculum revisions; researching, reviewing and recommending resource materials to implement or enhance the program or courses; maintaining a record of all course outlines and material used in course/program delivery; developing and administering materials for learner evaluation; assessing learners’ performance of skills; and travelling to other communities for course delivery when required. The incumbent will also assist in on-going growth and development of the Program by making recommendations to the Chair.
The ideal candidate will have a Bachelor’s degree in Education or appropriate to program offerings, instructional experience at the elementary level, experience in the instruction and supervision of adult learners in a post-secondary setting, and experience in educational/personal counselling. Fluency in both oral and written Inuktut is required.
A combination of education, and work experience equivalencies may be considered.
Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatugangit is an asset.
