Reporting to the Manager Wildlife Research, the incumbent works with department staff, the Nunavut Wildlife Management Board, the Nunavut Planning Commission and the Nunavut Impact Review Board to ensure that all types of wildlife harvesting and other human activities are conducted in a manner which does not compromise the sustainability of the wildlife resource. The key role of the Biologist will be coordination of Nunavut responses to ecosystem scale issues and information requests relating to wildlife and wildlife habitat in Nunavut. The Biologist will work closely with regional biologists and species specialists at headquarters.   

The Ecosystems Research Coordinator and Environmental Assessment Biologist is responsible for advising, developing, coordinating and interpreting research and response strategies to ensure wildlife habitat use in Nunavut is ecologically sustainable, in particular from the perspective of ecosystem and habitat management, environmental assessment of major mineral, gas and oil development or exploration applications and/or mining operations, coordinating long-term monitoring, assessment of cumulative effects on wildlife of anthropogenic activities on a population scale, and in selected cases individual species management. 

An in-depth knowledge of arctic wildlife population dynamics and habitat monitoring techniques, including field and statistical techniques are required for this position. The incumbent must have computer operation skills with proven ability to establish databases and geographic information systems relevant to wildlife data and habitats. The incumbent must have proven supervisory skills, possess excellent presentation skills and the ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.

Ability to communicate well with wildlife users and associations such as Hunters and Trappers Associations is required. The incumbent should also have the ability to work cooperatively with scientific peers as well as client groups to develop and implement wildlife management plans.

The incumbent should have the ability to write about management objectives and research for both public and scientific review and have experience and a sound background in environmental assessment. Proven ability to estimate study costs and administer budgets is also required to be successful in this position.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a minimum of a Master of Science degree in Wildlife Biology, plus five years of related experience, including, designing and conducting field research, data management and analysis, strong database and GIS skills, public consultation and publication of peer reviewed reports.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Ability to communicate in Inuktitut is an asset.

Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
