The Nunavut Building Code Act, Fire Safety Act and Technical Standards and Safety Act (the “safety codes”) exist to create a system that provides a safe physical environment for Nunavummiut to live and work. The Acts establish the responsibility of the Minister to coordinate and encourage the safe management of everything to which the Acts and their respective Regulations apply.
Reporting to the Assistant Deputy Minister, Infrastructure; The Director, Safety Services is responsible for providing direction and leadership in regards to oversight and administration of the Nunavut Building Code Act (BCA), Fire Safety Act (FSA), and Technical Standards and Safety Act (TSSA) and their respective Regulations. Buildings include those used for assembly, institutional, residential, commercial, mercantile and industrial occupancy and range from simple to complex in size and design.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually acquired by having a Degree in a related field. In addition, you should have experience in the application of safety codes; 10 years of professional experience in the field including the application of safety codes and standards; 5 of those years should be in a management capacity.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. The ability to speak Inuktitut/Inuinnaqtun would be considered an asset; the knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit would be considered an asset and certification as a “Safety Codes Officer” would be considered an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
