A high-impact career opportunity for a proven relationship builder who leads by example and through collaboration while creating a strong service orientation and fostering a supportive, empowering and respectful workplace.

Officially founded in 1999, Nunavut exists where tradition meets progress. Much of the Territory has inherited millennia of history and culture of Inuit. Rooted in this rich tradition, the Government of Nunavut (GN) prepares for a prosperous future by investing in high-quality education, healthcare, culture, environmental protection, and industry growth.

The Government of Nunavut is seeking a Deputy Minister of Health who, working closely with the Minister and in alignment with the Department’s vision as “A leader in service excellence to Nunavut communities and governments,” will play a key role in delivering on its mission to “Promote, protect and enhance the health and well-being of all Nunavummiut, incorporating Inuit societal values at all levels of service delivery and design”.

Guided by the values of service excellence, sustainability, health and safety, and corporate excellence of the Department of Health, you will support the Minister in fulfilling their collective and individual ministerial responsibilities as well as in their accountability to Cabinet. More specifically, they will count on you for strategic planning, providing leadership in the development of policy and legislation, communications, budget coordination, capital planning, financial services, human resource development, and system support. Leadership and coordination in the areas of nursing, regional service delivery, and overall departmental quality assurance are also key functions of this Branch.

As the new DM of Health, you will provide direction and leadership regarding the core functions of public health. You will impact the lives and well-being of residents in communities throughout Nunavut with strategies and approaches that combine education and skill building, social policy, inter-sectoral partnership and collaboration, regulation, community development, and the support of effective clinical preventive interventions.

This is an exceptional opportunity for a seasoned executive with experience managing people and processes in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment. You will be a savvy leader who can interpret and apply legislation such as the Medical Profession Act, the Public Health Act and the Medical Care Act, and ensure the establishment and maintenance of professional standards and best practices, while advocating for the preservation and improvement of the health of Nunavummiut. You will also possess a distinguished record of accomplishment in executive leadership and public sector stewardship within the health sector.

Both a strategic thinker and a service-focused leader of change, you will model and instill citizen-focused service while working to create a multi-lingual, inclusive, and diverse culture, encourage debate and ideas from staff and stakeholders at all levels, and bring resolution to problems and emerging issues in a sometimes-ambiguous environment of competing interests and priorities. As Deputy Minister of this high-profile department, you will work closely to develop stronger relationships with communities and community agencies, ensure that funding is in place to deliver on key government and community priorities, and work collaboratively with other GN departments to share knowledge and best practices.

This senior executive position offers the opportunity to support the success and vitality of a vast and growing territory and the quality of life of its communities, while enjoying a very attractive compensation and benefits package.
