Reporting to the Facility Manager, Akaususisarvik, the Cook provides food services for clients and staff within established guidelines, and according to the food safety standards for healthcare settings. The incumbent interacts with staff and the general public on a daily basis and provides professional responses to inquiries, incidences, or complaints, escalating to management as required.
The Cook provides service within the facility and ensures that the food production/reheating are done according to food safe practice guidelines as determined by the Food Safety Code of Practice for Canada’s Foodservice industry. As a front-line staff for infection control, all employees must ensure that the principles of food safety, infection control and cross contamination are strictly adhered to. The Cook will also ensure the accuracy of the client’s therapeutic diets and that they respect the diet order as prescribed and prepare all meals for cafeteria, including the preparation of food items in advance.
The knowledge, skills, and experience required for this job are usually obtained through completion of a Grade (8) eight along with one (1) year of food preparation experience. A Food Safe Certificate is also required. Incumbents must be willing to obtain additional food service-related training, development and certification during the course of employment.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
