Reporting to the Manager of Communications, the Communications Specialist is responsible for providing communications and public affairs products and services to the Government of Nunavut (GN) Department of Health. Specifically, the incumbent will provide senior level strategic advice and develop and deliver communication programming, products and activities. This includes writing news releases, reports, backgrounders, facts sheets and speeches, as well as editing various materials. The incumbent will also be involved in media relations, marketing, advertising, research and evaluation.
The department encompasses over 1000 employees, 26 health facilities, providing 24 hour, seven –day-a-week service, additional facilities in an out of the territory medical service coordination and health prevention programs. Through the provision of these services, the incumbent will assist in educating and informing both the public and public service about department programs, policies and initiatives, as well as lifesaving messages due to health related crises in communities, regions or in the entire territory.
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized College Diploma in related field such as journalism, marketing or communications, plus two (2) years of experience in a communications environment (i.e. news media, advertising, marketing, public relations). Experience in project management is also required for this position.
The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English and French. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official language is an asset. Knowledge of Inuit language, communities, culture, land and Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit is an asset.
Equivalencies that consist of an acceptable combination of education and experience may be considered.
